iTunes in the Cloud looks to be hitting more of Europe with TV series, films (update: confirmed)

iTunes in the Cloud looks to be hitting parts of Europe with TV series, films

While stateside users might complain that we get all the good stuff in Europe first, Apple's iTunes in the Cloud for movies and TV shows has finally got around to rolling in to France and other parts of Europe, eons after it came out in the US. We confirmed that the new functionality works in France, which lets you buy films and TV shows from a computer, Apple TV or iOS device, then download it for free from the cloud on another. Others have reported by Twitter that it's working in Holland and Sweden as well, making it the first big move for the service since it rolled into the UK, Australia and Canada last summer. Until now, users in those nations were only able to download books, apps and music purchased in iTunes from the cloud. There's still no word from Apple about the move, however, and the list of supported countries hasn't been updated for those features -- so we'll enjoy it for now and hope Cupertino doesn't change its mind.

Update: We've confirmed with Apple that this rollout has indeed taken place. Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden all get movies in the cloud, while France gets both movies and TV series in the cloud.

Former Square COO Keith Rabois Joins Square Investor Khosla Ventures As Partner

keith-rabois-techcrunchKeith Rabois is going to be a full-time investor after more than a decade in operating roles. And fittingly, he’ll be doing that as a partner at Khosla Ventures — a high-powered firm as feisty, contrarian, and entrepreneur-focused as he is. Rather than being put off, Silicon Valley had jumped at the chance to hire him after he left his COO role at Square over an employee’s sexual harassment claim in January. Sources say that, while he was weighing offers from Khosla and a new executive role at Airbnb?in recent days, he also fielded serious inquiries from a large handful of other venture firms and tech companies. Firm founder Vinod Khosla has had one of the better views of the situation. He sits on Square’s board, and so is privy to the details of the claim. When I asked him for comment on the matter during a phone interview yesterday, he only pointed me to the supportive statements from the company, as well as Rabois’ own post on the matter?– but the hiring reads like a big “he’s not guilty” sign. Rabois and Khosla have been working together as investor and startup executives since 2007 and through other difficult situations — a theme Khosla hits on in a separate post for us today. In it, he explains how his firm is focused on hands-on “venture assistance” to entrepreneurs they invest in, helping them through the inevitable highs and lows of building big-league tech companies. Khosla put money into app developer Slide in 2006, shortly before Rabois joined it from LinkedIn. The company ultimately sold to Google in 2010 for $228 million?after a long journey building a variety of social apps designed around self-expression. At times it had major hits like a slide-show widget on Myspace and the famous sheep-throwing app SuperPoke! on Facebook, but it never found a truly big business in that fast and loose industry. Rabois’ move to Square after the sale marked a return to his roots in the payments business. He’d been an early leader at PayPal during its ride to public offering and eventual sale to eBay. A formative member of the PayPal Mafia, he’s been actively investing for years (we currently count around 40 investments in CrunchBase). He currently sits on the boards of money-transfer service Xoom,?since 2003, which just had a successful IPO?this month, and reviews site Yelp, since 2005, which went public

High-stakes oil spill trial begins

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? BP bears most of the blame for the disastrous 2010 spill in the Gulf of Mexico because it cut corners and put profits ahead of safety, a U.S. Justice Department attorney charged Monday at the opening of a high-stakes trial that could result in the oil company and its partners being forced to pay billions more in damages.

The London-based oil giant acknowledged it made "errors in judgment" before the deadly blowout, but it also cast blame on the owner of the drilling rig and the contractor involved in cementing the well. It denied it was grossly negligent, as the government contended.

The civil case went to trial after attempts to reach an 11th-hour settlement failed.

Eleven workers were killed when the Deepwater Horizon rig leased by the BP exploded on April 20, 2010. An estimated 172 millions of gallons of crude spilled into the Gulf over the three months that followed.

Justice Department attorney Mike Underhill said the catastrophe resulted from BP's "culture of corporate recklessness."

"The evidence will show that BP put profits before people, profits before safety and profits before the environment," Underhill said in opening statements. He added: "Despite BP's attempts to shift the blame to other parties, by far the primary fault for this disaster belongs to BP."

BP attorney Mike Brock acknowledged that the oil company made mistakes. But he accused rig owner Transocean Ltd. of failing to properly maintain the rig's blowout preventer, which had a dead battery, and he claimed cement contractor Halliburton used a "bad slurry" that failed to prevent oil and gas from traveling up the well.

BP has already pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other criminal charges and has racked up more than $24 billion in spill-related expenses, including cleanup costs, compensation for businesses and individuals, and $4 billion in criminal penalties.

But the federal government, Gulf Coast states and individuals and businesses hope to convince a judge that the company and its partners in the ill-fated drilling project are liable for much more in civil damages under the federal Clean Water Act and other environmental regulations.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier is hearing the case without a jury and ? barring a settlement ? will decide months from now how much more money BP and the other companies must pay.

During opening statements, attorney Jim Roy, who represents individuals and businesses hurt by the spill, said BP executives applied "huge financial pressure" to "cut costs and rush the job." The project was more than $50 million over budget and behind schedule at the time of the blowout, Roy said.

"BP repeatedly chose speed over safety," Roy said, quoting from a report by an expert who may testify.

Roy said the spill also resulted from Transocean's "woeful" safety culture and failure to properly train its crew. And Roy said Halliburton provided BP with a product that was "poorly designed, not properly tested and was unstable."

BP's partners pointed the finger at the oil company and at each other.

Brad Brian, a lawyer for Transocean, said the company had an experienced, well-trained crew on the rig. He said the Transocean workers' worst mistake may have been placing too much trust in the BP supervisors on the rig.

"And they paid for that trust with their lives," Brian said. "They died not because they weren't trained properly. They died because critical information was withheld from them."

A lawyer for Halliburton defended the company's work and tried to pin the blame on BP and Transocean.

"If BP had shut in the well, we would not be here today," Halliburton's Donald Godwin said.

Underhill, the Justice Department attorney, heaped blame on BP for cost-cutting decisions made in the months and weeks leading up the disaster. He said two BP rig supervisors, Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine, disregarded abnormally high pressure readings that should have been glaring indications of trouble.

Kaluza and Vidrine have been indicted on federal manslaughter charges.

Brock, the BP lawyer, said Transocean employees on the rig also played roles in misinterpreting the "negative pressure test."

"It was a mistake made by several men from two different companies," Brock said. "They were trying to get it right. They were trying to do the right thing."

Hundreds of attorneys have worked on the case, generating roughly 90 million pages of documents, logging nearly 9,000 docket entries and taking more than 300 depositions from witnesses who could testify at trial.

"In terms of sheer dollar amounts and public attention, this is one of the most complex and massive disputes ever faced by the courts," said Fordham University law professor Howard Erichson, an expert in complex litigation.

One of the biggest questions facing the judge is whether BP acted with gross negligence.

Under the Clean Water Act, a polluter can be forced to pay a minimum of $1,100 per barrel of spilled oil; the fines nearly quadruple to about $4,300 a barrel for companies found grossly negligent, meaning BP could be on the hook for nearly $18 billion.

The judge plans to hold the trial in at least two phases. The first phase, which could last three months, is designed to determine what caused the blowout and assign percentages of blame to the companies involved. The second phase will determine how much crude spilled into the Gulf.

The spill fouled marshes, killed wildlife and closed fishing grounds. Scientists warn that the disaster's full effect may not be known for years. But they have reported dying coral reefs and fish afflicted with lesions and illnesses that might be oil-related.

'Spider Sense' suit trades sight for touch

A student project has resulted in a suit that mimics Spider-Man's famous "spider sense," allowing the wearer to sense obstacles and other people without the benefit of sight. It still has a ways to go, though, so using it to fight crime is not advised.

Victor Mateevisti at the University of Illinois, Chicago decided to investigate whether something like an enhanced sense of one's environment can be created with off-the-shelf sensors and hardware. The answer is: Not quite yet, but we're getting there.

The suit consists of ultrasonic rangefinders placed at various attitudes that feed into a central processor. That processor sends signals to small mechanical arms that put pressure on the body in the general region of the object detected.

The approach is similar to that of the Tacit, a hand-worn "sonar for the blind" that translates distance into pressure, but the SpiderSense suit detects its environment in several directions at once.

So, for example, if a person were to approach someone wearing this suit from behind, the sensor would detect that person when they came in range and pressure would be applied to the user's back. If they came from the left, pressure would be applied on the left.

Experiments with a blindfolded test subject had mixed results. In some situations, such as a simple hallway or open area with pedestrians coming and going, the test subject could accurately detect the direction and distance of obstacles (and even hit them with cardboard throwing stars made for that purpose).

On the other hand, navigating the aisles of the library proved impractical: the narrow corridors and openings didn't produce intelligible information.

Mateevitsi told New Scientist that the goal isn't necessarily a whole suit. A limited version of the system could be used by a bicyclist to be better aware of traffic behind him, for instance.

The results and methodology of the project can be viewed in Mateevitsi's paper (PDF); The findings will also be presented next week at the Augmented Human conference in Stuttgart, Germany.

JERUSALEM -- A rocket exploded in southern Israel on Tuesday in the first such attack by militants in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip since a truce ended a week of cross-border fighting in November, Israeli police said.

The rocket caused some damage to a road near the city of Ashkelon but no injuries, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

A rocket was fired into Israel today amid heightened tensions over the death of a Palestinian in Israeli custody. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

"An explosion was heard in the Ashkelon region experts searched areas experts and found one rocket that struck, damaging a road but causing no injuries," Rosenfeld said.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant group in Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' West Bank-based Fatah movement, called the rocket a "first response" to inmate Arafat Jaradat's death in disputed circumstances on Saturday.?

"We must resist our enemy by all available means," the group said in a statement emailed to reporters. "We stress our commitment to armed struggle against the Zionist enemy."

Hamas said it was investigating the attack, which followed a surge in West Bank protests since Jaradat's death and intermittent hunger strikes by four other prisoners.

In the latest violence there, Israeli troops shot and wounded five Palestinians during confrontations with protesters in the Bethlehem area on Monday and a 15-year-old boy was in critical condition.

The death in disputed circumstances of Arafat Jaradat, buried in a funeral in the Hebron area attended by thousands on Monday, and a hunger strike by four other Palestinian inmates, have stoked tensions ahead of a planned visit next month by U.S. President Barack Obama.

Apple shareholder vote blocked in hedge fund lawsuit

Seattle: A United States federal judge blocked has an Apple shareholder vote in response to a hedge fund lawsuit that claimed the tech giant was improperly bundling questions on a ballot.

The ruling was a win for hedge fund Greenlight Capital, which has been pressing Apple to give shareholders more of its huge cash stockpile.

The preliminary injunction ordered by judge Richard Sullivan has no impact on Apple's distribution of cash but prevents a vote on a proposal supported by management to make it impossible for the Apple board to issue preferred stock without shareholder approval.

Greenlight has urged Apple to issue 'perpetual preferred stock' at no cost to Apple's existing shareholders to get some of the company's $137 billion cash stockpile to its stock owners.

The hedge fund alleged that Apple violated US securities policies by 'bundling' the proposal on preferred stock with two other shareholder-friendly measures.

Doing so forces shareholders to accept or reject all three measures together, rather than separately, which Greenlight says violates a Securities and Exchange Commission rule.?
Sullivan granted the injunction, saying that the lawsuit was "likely to succeed on the merits" and that the plaintiffs, which include Greenlight and another investor, 'face irreparable harm' if the vote proceed.

But the judge denied a separate request for an advisory vote on the compensation of Apple's top executives. Last week, Apple chief executive Tim Cook said the company was examining ways to distribute more cash to shareholders but claimed the litigation was "a silly sideshow." "This is a waste of shareholder money," he said of the suit.

Right of shareholders
Cook said it was "an incredible privilege" to be in the position of deciding what to do with the company's $137 billion cash stockpile, and maintained that Apple will do so "deliberately and thoughtfully."

But he maintained that the lawsuit was not about returning cash, but instead about 'the right of shareholders' to authorise any special stock issue.

"Frankly, I find it bizarre that we would find ourselves being sued for doing something that's good for shareholders," he said, adding that the company would likely seek shareholder approval even if not required.

(AP) ? Fans feeling unsafe after the horrific crash at Daytona International Speedway were able to change seats for NASCAR's biggest race.

Track President Joie Chitwood said Sunday workers successfully repaired a section of fence ? 54 feet wide and 22 feet high ? that was shredded Saturday when Kyle Larson's car went airborne on the final lap of a second-tier race and crashed through the barrier that separates cars from fans. Large pieces of debris, including a tire, sprayed into the upper and lower section of the stands.

The crash injured more than 30 people, raising more questions about fan safety at race tracks.

Halifax Health spokesman Byron Cogdell said seven people with crash-related injuries remained hospitalized Sunday in Daytona Beach in stable condition. The six people brought to a different Halifax hospital in Port Orange with crash-related injuries had all been discharged by Sunday morning, Cogdell said.

A spokeswoman at Florida Memorial Medical Center would not release information Sunday on the patients brought to that hospital.

Chitwood, meanwhile, said if any fans are uncomfortable with their up-close seating for Sunday's Daytona 500, officials would work to move them. The race started as scheduled.

"If fans are unhappy with their seating location or if they have any incidents, we would relocate them," Chitwood said Sunday. "So we'll treat that area like we do every other area of the grandstand. If a fan is not comfortable where they're sitting, we make every accommodation we can."

Larry Spencer of Nanticoke, Pa., said Sunday he's not sure he wants to ever sit that low again after his 15-year-old brother, Derrick, needed three stitches in his cheek after being hit by metal debris flying from the crash. They sat close to the fence Saturday, but returned for the Daytona 500 with tickets dozens of rows farther away from the track.

"I thought it was just neat to see the cars going by that close," Spencer said. "After yesterday, though, I definitely will reconsider sitting lower ever again."

The tire that flew into the stands landed a couple of rows above where they had been standing. After the crash, looking around at the people seriously injured, Spencer said he decided to take his brother to a hospital himself so that speedway crews and paramedics could focus on the people who needed more help.

"The only way to describe it was like a bomb went off, and the car pretty much exploded," Spencer said.

Track workers finished repairs about 2 a.m. Sunday, having installed a new fence post, new metal meshing and part of the concrete wall.

Officials decided not to rebuild the collapsed cross-over gate, which allows fans to travel between the stands and the infield before races.

Daytona has a grandstand remodel planned. Chitwood said the injuries could prompt a redesign that might include sturdier fences or stands further away from the on-track action.

"It's tough to connect the two right now in terms of a potential redevelopment and what occurred," Chitwood said. "We were prepared yesterday, had emergency medical respond. As we learn from this, you bet: If there are things that we can incorporate into the future, whether it's the current property now or any other redevelopment, we will.

"The key is sitting down with NASCAR, finding out the things that happened and how we deal with them."

Daytona reexamined its fencing and ended up replacing the entire thing following Carl Edwards' scary crash at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama in 2009. Edwards' car sailed into the fence and spewed debris into the stands.

"We've made improvements since then," Chitwood said. "I think that's the key: that we learn from this and figure out what else we need to do."

NASCAR plans to take what remained of Larson's sheared car along with debris back to its research and development center in Charlotte, N.C., for testing.

"We'll bring in the best and brightest," said Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's senior vice president for racing operations. "Anything we can learn will be put in place. ... Fans are our first priority. Obviously we want everybody to be safe at an event. We've talked to the speedway. We're confident in what's in place at today's event. Certainly still thinking about those affected, but we're confident to move forward for this race."

The 12-car crash began as the front-runners approached the checkered flag. Leader Regan Smith attempted to block Brad Keselowski for the win, triggering a pileup that could have been much worse.

Larson's burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence. Parts and pieces of his car sprayed into the stands, including a tire that cleared the top of the fence and landed midway up the spectator section closest to the track.

The 20-year-old Larson stood in shock a few feet from his car as fans in the stands waved frantically for help. Smoke from the burning engine briefly clouded the area, and emergency vehicles descended on the scene.

Ambulance sirens could be heard wailing behind the grandstands at a time the race winner would typically be doing celebratory burnouts.

"It was freaky. When I looked to my right, the accident happened," Rick Harpster of Orange Park said. "I looked over and I saw a tire fly straight over the fence into the stands, but after that I didn't see anything else. That was the worst thing I have seen, seeing that tire fly into the stands. I knew it was going to be severe."

In 1987, Bobby Allison's car lifted off the track at Talladega while running over 200 mph, careening into the steel-cable fence and scattering debris into the crowd. That crash led to the use of horsepower-sapping restrictor plates at Talladega and its sister track in Daytona, NASCAR's fastest layouts.

As a result, the cars all run nearly the same speed, and the field is typically bunched tightly together ? which plenty of drivers have warned is actually a more dangerous scenario than higher speeds.

"That's one of the things that really does scare you," Allison said Sunday. "But it's always a possibility because of the speeds, where they are."

Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 preview: an 8-inch S Pen tablet that's also a phone

Samsung Galaxy Note 80 preview an 8inch S Pen tablet that's also a phone

An updated, larger Galaxy Note from Samsung was inevitable. Given the undeniable popularity of mid-size tablets (see: Apple iPad mini), it's no surprise the Korean electronics giant would want to strengthen its foothold in a category it helped create. It was just three short years ago that Samsung introduced the Galaxy Tab and now, three Notes later, it's ready to perfect the one-handed experience. With this new Note, the company's culled the best of what's around its Galaxy into an 8-inch form factor, housing a 1,280 x 800 TFT display, Exynos 4 Quad with 2GB RAM (clocked at 1.6GHz), TouchWiz-skinned Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 OS, S Pen (and suite of associated apps), as well as radios for HSPA+ and WiFi into that familiar, lightweight plastic body.

But that extra inch alone isn't the Galaxy Note 8.0's main attraction. Samsung's wisely made use of the additional screen real estate to bundle two extra features. Building upon market research that indicates over 80-percent of tablet use takes place within the living room, the company's partnered with Peel for its Smart Remote app, a visual programming guide with remote control functions baked-in that comes pre-loaded on the tab. And, in keeping with its portrait oriented design, the Note 8.0 also incorporates what the company calls "reading mode," effectively optimizing the slate's display for comfortable e-book use.

Hardware options for highly available Windows Server 2012 systems using shared, directly-attached storage

Highly available Windows Server 2012 systems using shared, directly-attached storage can be built using either Storage Spaces or a validated clustered RAID controller.

?

Option 1 ? Storage Spaces

You can build a highly available shared SAS system today using Storage Spaces.

Storage Spaces works well in a standalone PC, but it is also capable of working in a Windows Server Failover Clustering environment.?

For implementing Clustered Storage Spaces, you will need the following Windows Server 2012 certified hardware:

  • Any SAS Host Bus Adapter or HBA (as long as it?s SAS and not a RAID controller, you should be fine)
  • SAS JBODs or disk enclosures (listed under the ?Storage Spaces? category on the Server catalog)
  • SAS disks (there?s a wide variety of those, including capacity HDDs, performance HDDs and SSDs)

You can find instructions on how to configure a Clustered Storage Space in Windows Server 2012 at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/clustering/archive/2012/06/02/10314262.aspx.

A good overview of Storage Spaces and its capabilities can be found at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/15198.storage-spaces-overview.aspx

There's also an excellent presentation from TechEd that covers Storage Spaces at http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/NorthAmerica/2012/WSV315

?

Option 2 ? Clustered RAID Controllers

The second option is to build a highly available shared storage system using RAID Controllers that are designed to work in a Windows Server Failover Cluster configuration.

The main distinction between these RAID controllers and the ones we used before is that they work in sets (typically a pair) and coordinate their actions against the shared disks.

Here are some examples:

  • The HP StoreEasy 5000 cluster-in-a-box uses Clustered RAID controllers?that HP sources and certifies. You can find details at the HP StoreEasy product page.
  • LSI is working on a Clustered RAID controller with Windows Server 2012 support. This new line of SAS RAID Controllers is scheduled for later this year. You can get details?on?availability dates from LSI.

?

Both options work great for all kinds of Windows Server 2012 Clusters, including Hyper-V Clusters, SQL Server Clusters, Classic File Server Clusters and Scale-Out File Servers.

You can learn more about these solutions in this TechEd presentation: http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/Europe/2012/WSV310

It's the QBs, not the scout

55th Annual Women's Guild Cedars-Sinai Gala - InsideGetty Images

The stories of the football influences on Jim Harbaugh were well told and often during the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl. But perhaps the biggest impact on his NFL Scouting Combine preparation isn?t Bo Schembechler or Jack Harbaugh, but Judge Judy.

While discussing the need for draft prospects to be forthcoming during interviews, Harbaugh admitted being a fan of the syndicated television jurist.

Because of course he did.

?Somebody that?s not truthful, that?s big, to me,? the 49ers coach said. ?I?m a big fan of the Judge Judy show. And when you lie in Judge Judy?s courtroom, it?s over. Your credibility is completely lost. You have no chance of winning that case. So I learned that from her.

?It?s very powerful, and true. Because if somebody does lie to you, how can you ever trust anything they ever say after that? Ronald Reagan, another person of great wisdom and advice, ?Trust but we will verify.? ?

Of course, the discussion of trust centers on tomorrow?s arrival of Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te?o, of the fake dead girlfriend fame.

But when Harbaugh was asked if the trust factor made Te?o undraftable, he replied: ?No. I wouldn?t say that.?

That?s why even though the interview Te?o does with the assembled media tomorrow will draw plenty of eyeballs, the meetings he holds with teams this week will carry more weight.

?I think there?s certainly a part of being with somebody for a half an hour or 15-minutes or an hour or two that you can know somebody,? Harbaugh said. ?Some people have that ability to have a 30-minute conversation with them and you walk away thinking you really know that person. Others, you can?t.

?You have to validate a meeting with a person or two or three conversations with their track record, their relationships with other people at their school, their teammates, their trainers, equipment managers, teachers, professors, their family. People usually leave a track record of success or failure or success and failure.?

Or in the case of Judge Judy, 17 years of television fame, and the admiration of a professional football coach.

Sixth grade girl takes on Philadelphia archdiocese for right to play football

Caroline Pla, 11, is fighting for the right to continue playing football in Philadelphia's Catholic Youth Organization league. She has been in the league for a year already, but now the Philadelphia archdiocese is threatening to enforce the league's boys-only rule.

By Mary Claire Dale,?Associated Press / February 23, 2013

Caroline Pla, 11, accompanied by her mother Marycecelia "Seal" Pla, listens to a question during an interview Thursday, in Doylestown, Pa. The Plas are fighting the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia for the right to continue playing church sponsored youth football.

The Roman Catholic church in Philadelphia doesn't need another public relations headache after years of priest-abuse and school-closure headlines, but it's got one in the form of a pony-tailed 11-year-old athlete.

Sixth-grader Caroline Pla is fighting the archdiocese for the right to keep playing church-sponsored youth football.

The soft-spoken twin has been battling boys on the gridiron since she was 5. She's played the last two seasons in a Catholic Youth Organization league, where the 5-foot-3, 110-pound offensive tackle and defensive end made the all-star team.

But the archdiocese may put the kibosh on her Catholic youth league career. While at least a few US dioceses let girls play football, and about 1,600 girls play on US high school teams, the Philadelphia league is open only to boys.

"First they said it was a boys sport. Then they said it was a safety issue. Then they said it was inappropriate touching. I think they are just constantly looking for excuses to not change it," Caroline said Thursday at her home in Buckingham Township, Bucks County.

She first played in a public Pop Warner league, then moved along with her teammates to the Catholic Youth Organization league in fifth grade. After one season without a hitch, she learned last fall that an overlooked boys-only rule would be enforced. The archdiocese, though, agreed to let her finish the season.

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput is now reviewing the ban, with a decision expected next month after a panel of coaches, parents and doctors weigh in.

"Traditionally, football is a boys-only sport due to its full contact nature," the church said in a statement. "Most parents and players have preferred this; some now disagree."

Caroline sent Chaput an email in January, explaining that her Catholic youth league team had been the best chapter in her burgeoning, three-season sports career.

By then, she and her parents, George and Marycecelia Pla, had taken to the airwaves to lobby for a rule change. An online petition has attracted more than 100,000 signatures, and Caroline recently appeared on Ellen DeGeneris' show as well as newscasts.

"I'm perplexed that you would contact me last, after publicizing your situation in both the national and regional media," Chaput wrote in a January email shared by the family. "That kind of approach has no effect on my decision-making. CYO rules exist for good reason."

The Women's Sports Foundation believes there are instead good reasons to reverse the rule ? and not just for the sake of girls.

"What the diocese is missing is all the wonderful things that come out of co-ed sports. The mutual respect that lasts a lifetime between girls and boys," said lawyer Nancy Hogshead-Makar, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist in swimming who now is senior director of advocacy for the Women's Sports Foundation.

From a safety perspective, pre-pubescent girls and boys are often the same size. And legally, private or religious groups that receive any type of federal funding ? through low-income lunch programs or other aid ? must abide by Title IX, the 1972 law that guarantees girls equal access to sports, she said. There are exceptions for contact sports, but they cannot be invoked once girls have been allowed to play in a program, she said.

Hogshead-Makar advises colleges to make sports activities co-ed whenever possible ? in the weight room, on the team bus, on the court. She believes the mutual contact fosters respect and reduces rates of violence against women.

No matter how Chaput rules, Caroline could still play football next season for Pop Warner or her school team. And she has no plans to play in high school because she doesn't think she'll be big enough to play her position at that level.

Her brother plays on the high school freshman team, while her twin sister and an older sister have been cheerleaders.

"Right now, I'm one of the biggest because I've hit my growth spurt and a lot of them haven't," said Caroline, who scored her first touchdown this past season on a 15-yard run. "It's just really fun."

Updated yesterday at 12:02 AM

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) ? Nicaragua has inaugurated a solar farm that the government says will benefit 1,100 homes.

The state-owned National Company of Electricity Transmission, or Enatrel, says in a statement that the array includes 5,880 solar panels. It says that Japan donated $11.4 million to build the solar farm and that Nicaragua invested $530,000.

Enatrel said Thursday that the farm will generate enough energy to supply 1,100 homes that consume an average of 150 kilowatt hour a month.

Sony Xperia SP set for MWC showing

Information on a new Sony smartphone called the Sony Xperia SP has emerged, pointing to an MWC 2013 reveal.

According to the information provided by Android Central, the Sony Xperia SP will be an upper-mid-range Android device that will slot in below the Sony Xperia Z.

The Sony Xperia SP will feature a 4.6-inch 720p display. This might sound like a top-end screen, but new high-end Android devices tend to be announced with 1080p displays.

Still, it'll run on a very capable 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, though it'll only be the dual-core variant.

The Sony Xperia SP will also sport an 8-megapixel camera with an Exmor RS image sensor. Meanwhile its 8GB of internal storage is another hint at the phone's next gen mid-range status, though there'll also be a microSD slot for expansion purposes.

The device is said to be largely formed from aluminium, but with a plastic back. It'll weigh 155 grams, and it's dimensions will be 130.6 x 67.1 x 9.98mm.

One other interesting aspect is the phone's potential transparent bar, carried over from previous devices in the range, like the Sony Xperia P. However, here you may be able to customise the light bar for certain notifications.

The report claims that the Sony Xperia SP will be announced at the MWC show being held next week.

If this is the shape of the new Android mid-range, are you impressed? Let us know in the comments section below, or via the Trusted Reviews Twitter and Facebook feeds.

Russian PM in Brazil seeking arms, nuclear technology deals

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev met with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff on Wednesday on a visit to Brazil aimed at sealing defense and nuclear technology deals with a fellow member of the BRIC bloc of emerging nations.

On their agenda was the possible sale of Russian anti-aircraft missile systems to Brazil, a Brazilian government spokesman said.

Brazil is beefing up its air defenses ahead of the World Cup soccer tournament next year and the 2016 Olympic Games to ward off the threat of a terrorist attack during the global sporting events, which will draw massive crowds of foreigners.

Medvedev's trip follows a visit by Rousseff to Moscow in December that underlined the importance both countries attach to building relations among the BRIC club of emerging economies.

The BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - have a combined GDP of $14.9 trillion and have become increasingly vocal in criticizing developed nations' hold over global economic policies.

Ties between Brazil and Russia have been strengthening and they want to raise annual trade turnover to $10 billion from the current $6.5 billion.

Moscow will tout its advanced energy expertise and technology aiming to get involved in Brazil's plans to build new nuclear power stations to meet surging demand for electricity that has overwhelmed its generating capacity.

"We would like to offer our participation in the construction of nuclear plants and would like to get an invitation to participate in (the upcoming) tender," a senior official in the Russian delegation said.

He said Russia could train Brazil's nuclear staff, design research reactors and supply fuel for the future plants.

Medvedev also will try to clinch the sale of Russia's anti-aircraft missile technology, including the Pantsir S1 combined missile and artillery system and Igla-S portable surface-to-air missiles.

Brazil is interested in buying three Pantsir batteries with medium-range missiles and wants to acquire the technology to build the missiles itself in the future.

"We have already signed a commercial protocol on Igla-S supplies, which also foresees the opportunity of licensed production, but talks are ongoing," the Russian official said. "Licensed production launch may take some time, so they have expressed interest in importing Igla-S in the meantime too."

Russia is the world's second largest arms exporter and a deal with Brazil would largely be seen as a symbolic penetration of the Latin American defense market, after Russia lost some key contracts due to the Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East.

Medvedev also will discuss the possible increase of Brazilian meat supplies to Russia, its largest buyer, the official said, but Moscow's sanitary authorities will make sure it is compliant with all the necessary standards.

As a sign of the two countries drawing closer, Brazil on Tuesday became the first country outside Russia to host a monitoring station for the Russian satellite navigation system GLONASS, a global positioning system that uses 24 satellites.

Medvedev also will visit Cuba, a former Cold War-era ally, where Moscow expects to sign deals on medicine, space and aviation, possibly including on the supply to Havana of three Ukrainian-Russian Antonov-158 regional jets.

Despite rumored of declining demand, Apple?s iPhone 5 is the No.1 smartphone in the world

TORONTO, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Canada's Rebecca Marino, a rising star in women's tennis, stepped away from the sport in search of a normal life on Wednesday, weary of battling depression and cyber-bullies. Ranked number 38 in the world two years ago, the 22-year-old admitted she had long suffered from depression and was no longer willing to make the sacrifices necessary to reach the top. "After thinking long and hard, I do not have the passion or enjoyment to drive myself to the level I would like to be at in professional tennis," Marino explained in a conference call. ...

Pitched By A Dog Named Mitzi, Fings For Fido Wants To Be The ...

The technology industry has gone barking mad. Last week I got pitched by a dog named Mitzi. ?We are Europe?s BarkBox?, yapped the excitable dachshund, before explaining that UK-based Fings For Fido is a subscription service where each month dog owners are sent a box of ?canine goodies?, such as dog treats, toys, and grooming products. Alternatively, the startup offers one-off boxes as a way to sample the service or marketed around a particular calendar event, such as a Christmas box or one for Valentine?s Day (yes, even our four-legged friends adhere to Cupid?s timetable, apparently).

The concept isn?t new, of course. Along with BarkBox in the U.S., there?s BestFriendBox, while Fings For Fido has a direct competitor this side of the pond in the form of the recently launched PoochPack. However, it?s the type of products that end up in each box and the community feel of the site that Fings For Fido claims sets it apart from the competition.

mitzi_small?Our edge on the other UK markets is our approach?, yaps Mitzi, no doubt wagging his tail. ?We are not just looking at getting cheap product delivered to the customer via a subscription. With our dog behaviourist we want to make sure that what we are sending our customers is actually better for your pet.?

The dog behaviourist ? whatever that is ? that Mitzi refers to is actually one of Fings For Fido?s co-founders. ?She gives us key guidance on what is beneficial to a dog and what is just a marketing gimmick.?

In addition, curated content, such as free articles offering pet advice and an active social media presence, plays an important supporting role. ?We are really trying to create a real community around our brand and give passionate dog owners a place to discuss and share their experiences with dogs?, yaps Mitzi.

And, in an effort to ?give back?, the company has aligned with the organisation ?Hounds for Hero?s? in the UK by promising to donate a portion of its profit to the charity from each Fings For Fido box sold.

Bootstrapped and soft launched last November, Fings For Fido began by purchasing the contents of each box from suppliers as would any retailer. However, with the subscription model catching on in the UK and raising awareness amongst the pet industry, the company says it?s now being approached by suppliers, such as independent pet bakeries and various other dog products who want in on the action and see it as a good marketing opportunity.

Fings For Fido?s tech (what little there is) is bespoke, too, shunning an off-the-shelf e-commerce solution to enable it to add additional features such as QR codes on each box that link directly to a feedback page, essentially creating a 360 degree loop that circles online to offline and back again, and helps suppliers and Fings For Fido itself learn more about what works and what doesn?t. The company has also been experimenting with ?flash sales? on its Facebook page, with some success.

?The pet and specifically the dog market is a highly emotional and passionate space, people love their dogs and like to spend money on them,? adds Mitzi, sounding less and less like a real dog.
