Here at the Humane Society of Central Arizona, we love a happy ending. Adoption success stories are what it?s all about. We are hopeful that every dog and cat here will be adopted, but we always want to make sure that it?s into a forever home. Maybe you are considering adopting a new pet. If so, following are a few things we?d like everyone to consider before you make that decision. When you are ready, we?d love for you to come down and let us help you find your new companion. Shelter pets make the best pets, ask anyone who has ever adopted one. I saw a cute post on Facebook that said ?Whoever said money can?t buy happiness, never paid an adoption fee.?
Before you adopt at pet
When you adopt, you need to make a real commitment to care for your pet for its entire life, no matter what that entails, just as you would with a child.
Be prepared for a pet to affect other parts of your life for as long as you have the pet (can be up to 15 years for a dog and 20 years for cat). Your pet?s well-being should be considered when making all kinds of decisions, including travel, social life, relocating to a new home, adopting other pets, adding new family members, etc.
Verify in advance that you?re allowed to keep a pet where you live, especially if you rent or belong to a homeowners? association. Many property managers have restrictions on the breed of dog or the size and number of pets allowed. Verifying what is allowed first will make it easier to choose an appropriate companion.
Make any necessary modifications to your yard and fence, if you have one, to provide for your pet?s safety and to prevent your pet from escaping.
Choosing a pet is a personal decision. What may seem like the perfect companion to one person might be completely unacceptable to another. Don?t give a pet as a gift. If you want to help someone get a new pet, consider giving them a ride to the shelter or helping them with adoption fees.
Choose a pet that is appropriate to your living situation and lifestyle. Figure out what size, age and energy-level pet is most appropriate for you.
It can be tempting to walk through the shelter and see so many cute faces looking for new homes. But you should never adopt a pet on a whim or because you feel it?s love-at-first-sight. Do your research and carefully consider all the aspects and implications of adopting before you make a decision.
If you?re adopting a pet for your kids, understand that the responsibility is yours. Kids, by their nature, often tire of things that were once new and exciting, and this includes their pets. You will most likely end up being the one who provides most of the pet?s care.
Plan for a several-week adjustment period during which there will be challenges. A new pet will take some time to get comfortable in the home, and might need some time to get used to the new routine. And don?t forget that people in the home will need to adjust to a new routine, too!
Have a plan to provide sufficient exercise and stimulation ? walk dogs according to individual need, provide playtime and appropriate toys for both dogs and cats, spend time just petting and talking to your pet, and include the pet in family activities.
Bring all family members to meet the animal you are interested in. It?s really important for everyone in the home to be on the same page when it comes to adding a new companion.
Coming events
Join us this Saturday, March 16 at the Petco in Fountain Hills for an adoption event. We are teaming up with Petco and their ?Think Adoption First? program and will have some of our adorable adoptable dogs available for adoption. Petco is located at 16835 E. Shea Blvd. in Fountain Hills. We will be there from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., so come down and meet your new companion.
A Low-Cost Rabies Clinic will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13 at Main Street Animal Clinic, 411 W. Main St.
Rabies vaccinations are only $10. There will be a licensing fee for all dogs. This is a CASH ONLY event. For more information, please contact Main Street Animal Clinic at 474-9292, or HSCAZ at 474-5590.
Adoptable pets
These are just a few of the wonderful pets currently available for adoption at the HSCAZ shelter, located at 605 W. Wilson Court (just south of Main Street). Hours are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.humanesocietycentralaz.org.
BELLA
Bella is a sweet girl who enjoys the company of humans. She gets along well with other dogs and loves to play. She is pretty active and will need plenty of exercise. She is affectionate, active and looking to find her forever home.
BLUE?
Blue is smart boy who knows some basic commands like ?sit,? ?stay? and ?down.? He is affectionate with people and has lived with young kids. Blue gets along best with other dogs that are easygoing, playful and friendly. Blue loves to play with all kinds of toys, especially balls.
MADDIE?
Maddie is an easygoing girl who is used to living in a quiet home. She loves to go for car rides and walks well on a leash. Maddie gets along with other dogs that are easygoing like her. She knows some basic commands and has manners. She loves attention and is great with people she knows.
CLEOPATRA
This beautiful girl is super-affectionate and loves to be in your lap. She is still adjusting to being around the other cats, but is doing well. Cleopatra is looking for a home where she will be loved and cared for, for the rest of her life.
MILO
Milo is super-affectionate and loves spending time with people. He gets along well with other cats and can either be found playing around or taking a nap with one. Though he enjoys playing with toys, he also likes to take it easy and relax.
VENUS?
Venus is a very sweet girl who is pretty easygoing. She came in as a stray with her sister Serena. Venus loves her wet food and also enjoys ear scratches and belly rubs. She is litter box trained and is a clean girl. She likes to play with kitty toys and is pretty affectionate.
