Game Consoles Suffer From Social

In case you hadn?t noticed, gaming consoles such as Playstation, Wii and Xbox have been seeing a decline in buyers. Some industry insiders say it is because the systems haven?t been updated in more than five years, but many others say the real culprit is the rise of gaming and social media use on mobile devices.

Today millions of people are logging in to their social networks via a smart phone or tablet; some type of mobile device. They are also playing games. This has led to the rise of such now famous titles such as ?Angry Birds? and ?Words With Friends.?

But Nintendo, the makers of the Wii gaming system, once the most sought after of all game consoles, is fighting back in a big way. Part of their plan is a revamp of their system, but mostly it involves allowing users to access social media via their gaming system. It seems like a good move on their part, regardless of what you think of social media in general.

Competition is great for the consumer, but the rise of social media and mobile media is arguably the most disruptive technological advance we have ever seen. If companies which were once dominant do not now rise to the occasion, they are very likely to go the way of the dinosaur.

The world?s largest maker of video-game machines unveiled 23 games for the Wii U today at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. President Satoru Iwata hopes the console and a fresh crop of games will help Nintendo recover from a 43.2 billion-yen ($551 million) net loss for the year ended March 31 ? its first loss since being listed.

Nintendo is changing tactics, combining social-media features and TV screen action with a touch-screen controller as the company, based in Kyoto, Japan, faces competition from an online game market that may grow to $37.9 billion by 2016. The question is whether the new console, Nintendo?s first since it introduced the Wii in 2006, features and games will attract consumers who may have moved on to newer ways to play.
