Take the Lead | Brescia Blog

This past Saturday was ?Take the Lead? also known as, quite possibly, my favourite Brescia event. I?ll admit that I am a little biased, as it is the event that engaged me in the Brescia community, introduced me to several of my best friends, and provided me with a full first year tuition scholarship.

I was asked to participate in this year?s event as the MC. I found this incredibly nerve-wracking, as I?m a little out of practice with my public speaking, not to mention the fact that it is a very important job. I realized the morning of the event that I was also nervous for another reason: I was anxious on behalf of the participants.

Would they be nervous? Would they be able to overcome their jitters? Would they be able to have fun? Would they like Brescia? Would they meet people? And, the greatest concern: would this day be as meaningful for them as it was for me a year and a half ago?

While I certainly cannot speak for everyone in attendance, the people I spoke with would have answered all of the above questions with a resounding ?YES!? The atmosphere of the event was very welcoming and enjoyable. The girls seemed to love Brescia, and the line up for tours was very long. And, as was the point of the entire event: the speeches were incredible.

The first place winner, Janice Lam, spoke on the fact that many girls? childhood to be a princess may not be a bad thing ? look at Queen Esther and Princess Diane! In second place, Julia MacArthur described the courage of Malala Yousufzai. And in third place, Emma Alexander challenged the portrayal of Florence Nightingale as simply ?The Lady with the Lamp.?

All of the speeches that I heard were incredibly wise, well-written, creative and well-delivered. I was very glad that I was not a judge this year, because their job could not have been more difficult. So, to everyone who participated in ?Take the Lead?, congratulations! I hope to see all of you at Brescia very soon! After all, YOU are Brescia Bold!
