Most of the time, students stroll through four years of college and find themselves wondering what they were doing the entire time. While they?ve certainly met the required course work for their respective majors, they might not have realized that the bogus courses that they took just to get easy grades were a waste of time.
With so many incredibly useful courses out there to help students succeed in life, there really is no excuse for take Basket Weaving-101, unless your major is, in fact, Basket Weaving, of course. All silliness aside, below you?ll find some of the most useful courses for all students to take, regardless of major.
1.???? Public Speaking
Man, oh man. Public Speaking? Everyone hates giving speeches. I know I do. But what you don?t realize is that public speaking courses are absolutely some of the most important courses you?ll take in your entire academic career. Why?Well, because every career this side of the universe requires proper speaking skills. Whether or not you?ll be speaking to an audience is irrelevant, it?s the fact that you?ll need good speaking skills to do well in just about any field. You need to speak to your team about changes? You need to present something to the board of directors? Both of these take good speech skills. Even interviewing requires good speaking skills. Very important course!
2.???? Writing
There are hundreds of writing courses out there and all of them are very beneficial. Much like how you should take public speaking courses to be a good speaker, you need to take writing courses to be an adequate writer.Obviously, you?re not looking to become Edgar Allen Poe reincarnated, but you need to at least sound articulate in your text. If you can?t even grasp the simple rules of English, how can you convey your message professionally without sounding like an imbecile? Lawyers, editors, journalists, accountants, financial analysts, business owners and engineers are all examples of careers that demand good writing skills. This is why everyone needs to take several writing course. Not just one.
3.???? Technical Documentation
Very scary name for a course, but it?s actually just a course that teaches students how to write resumes, interoffice memos, reports, presentations and a plethora of other important pieces.Again, just like how public speaking and writing help you with your speaking and writing skills, everyone needs to know how to write a solid resume and report. Even before you get a job, you need to have a nice resume that clearly outlines your education, career goals, past work experience and profile. If you can format a series of reports and presentations like a professional, in addition to crafting a stellar resume, you?ll be happy to know that employers love such skills. Gee, who would have thought!
I promise you that if you want to be successful in life, these courses will help you toward that goal. If not, well, good luck with your poorly constructed resume, uncanny ability to lose your train of thought in an important talk, and important document that is full of grammar problems and spelling errors!
But seriously, you should take these courses. Seriously.
